The National Cathedral is one of my favorite spots in Washington DC for so many reasons – the stunning Gothic architecture, the gorgeous gardens, and the ethereal atmosphere are just a few, to start! So, when Michelle and David reached out wanting dreamy and cinematic photos here, I knew it was going to be absolutely magical!
We began the session at Bishops Garden, a beautiful manicured garden right next to the National Cathedral. The grounds here are surrounded by stone walls to maintain an air of privacy and serenity, so it was easy to immediately feel relaxed, surrounded by the fragrant smell of florals being carried through the air and the sound of birds fluttering to and fro nearby branches. Our fairytale scene was set and M+D were already frolicking around the lawn, allowing me to capture the most romantic candid shots to start off our session.
I love directing my couples, but it’s always such a treat when my couples are the ones that lead the way and jump right into their own prompts! These two were fearless in front of the camera, having a blast with movement and guiding each other with every pose.
We then walked around to the front of the Cathedral to get a dramatic style of photos – such grand, intricate architecture requires poses that match! With the breeze picking up the light fabric of M’s dress, we were able to lean into the wind to capture the dramatic poses we envisioned!
Moving closer to entrance to the National Cathedral, we settled ourselves in a little corner of the frame to bring out more of the intricate iron detailing of the doors.
Continuing on our path around the Cathedral, we walked around to the side where we found more staircases and landings, heavenly halls and paths, and a courtyard right out of a storybook.
This part of the Cathedral is my favorite spot for capturing fantasy-like photos, especially since it looks so much like a castle! So much of my work is inspired by books and stories like Harry Potter, Greek mythology, and other works of fantasy. Those whimsical, ethereal and moody elements to my photos all derive from the stories I’ve read and loved growing up. It is such a gift to have a place like the National Cathedral available to let my creativity soar and give my clients the photos they’ve dreamed of!
We utilized the many staircases and levels of the Cathedral to capture a variety of angles, and the intricate architecture acted as leading lines for points of interest. You know, those bits that technical photographers gush over. For the more creative souls, we used these elements to capture romantic and divine feelings.
